Amalfi
Arrivederci, Roma! After another nice breakfast o the open air terrace of the Alimandi and four last cappuccinos from Francesco (who informed us he was getting streaks done on the weekend in preparation for his trip to Sardinia in August!), we took a taxi to the Termini and our Eurostar train to Naples. First class on a super fast train is a very nice way to travel and beats waiting endlessly in airports by a mile!
Giovanni was waiting for us on the tracks in Naples with a cardboard sign with our names on it (I felt like a celebrity and wanted Den to take a picture, which he quickly vetoed!). He took my luggage and navigated us out of the train station and out of busy Naples and drove us to our hotel in Positano, even stopping a few times along the way so Den could snap some pictures of the spectacular Amalfi coast. This was probably the best €80 we spent the entire trip. We were at the Albergo California (Hotel California!) before 1pm, were given a beautiful suite with a private balcony and Jacuzzi tub for €175 a night, breakfast included.
We walked down to the beach after unpacking, enjoying the little (expensive) shops along the way. We had lunch at 3 Stellas (right on the beach), Den had seafood pasta and I had a seafood pizza, both were great (and so was the wine!). I was feeling tired after lunch, so we went back to the room for a nap.
Got up around five and went back out, looking for someplace to fix Den’s Ray Bans, which he dropped that morning on the ceramic floor of our hotel room in Rome, shattering one of the lenses). We also wanted to try the local lemon granita, made with the area lemons, which grow to mutant proportions. We found both (Den’s glasses would be ready tomorrow morning) and continued wandering around and exploring Positano.
